SharePoint Saturday Cincinnati - SharePoint 2013 Search Results Customization

SharePoint Saturday Cincinnati is almost here! In fact… it's tomorrow. I thought I'd do something a little different this time and put out a little teaser on my topic. To be fair though… there's 19 other cool topics planned for Saturday, just click here to see the schedule.  Register NOW!   http://bit.ly/1DAprtv

So a bit about my presentation…

SharePoint 2013 Search Results Customization

Let's start with a problem… Our users can't find a certain kind of document; for example, PowerPoint presentations about our R&D projects. And when they find them, they don't know which ones are highly confidential, and more than once they have shared them with the wrong people.

And then a solution…

  • Create Site Columns for consistent metadata and to support Managed Property searches such as"ResearchGroup=aviation".
  • Configure the search schema to support friendly property names and the ability to search using "<" and ">" on dates and numbers.
  • Create a Content Type to ensure document classification and to collect important metadata.
  • Create a Display Template to add useful information to the search results, and display our Governance policies for R&D documents. ("Warning… confidential content. Do not share!")
  • Create a Result Type to map the Content Type to the Display Template.
  • Create a user friendly and governance friendly search results page.

All in an hour!

See you there!

Like two years ago, we have a theme! "ScarePoint Saturday" Come in costume or as you are…

ScarePoint_Saturday_Badge

My topic will be "Changes to SharePoint 2013 and Office 365 Security You Must Know"

Track: IT Pro, Developer, End-User, Business

SharePoint 2013 and Office 365 / SharePoint Online change many of the assumptions about managing end user security. It has buttons that break previous best practices and changes permission defaults in ways that can lead to loss of entire lists and libraries. This session will cover things that you need to know about SharePoint 2013 Authorization if you are responsible for SharePoint security or SharePoint governance and is very important for Site Owners and Site Collection Administrators.

See you there!

SharePoint Saturday Columbus–this Saturday!

spsblackspeakingsmTime flies when you are having fun, or working too much. Our next regional SharePoint Saturday is this weekend, 8/23/14, in Columbus. I will be speaking on SharePoint / Office 365 Governance.

See here for schedules and registration: http://www.spsevents.org/city/columbus/columbus2014

And don't forget the Cincinnati and the Louisville SharePoint Saturdays in October!

SharePoint Office 365 Governance... Should you do it? Can you do it?

Track: IT Pro, End-User, Business

SharePoint’s greatest strengths – flexibility and ease of use – can also become its greatest weaknesses if you don’t adequately plan for tremendous growth and proliferation of SharePoint sites/usage. Office 365 greatly expands the governance challenges as it is so easy for anyone to create a new 365 subscription.

Topics will include:
• SharePoint Governance – the core issues are the same
• You must have a policy for the cloud, even if it’s just “don’t go there!”
• The unique issues of cloud based SharePoint
• The backup, auditing and security management challenges
• Dealing with external users

My Goals:
• To get you thinking
• To get you concerned
• To convince you to get started on a plan

The takeaways:
• More questions than answers! (homework!)
• A list of things to be concerned about.
• A motivation to have a plan.
• Most of your existing governance still applies.
• Office 365 is a moving target!
• The need to communicate the plan to the users of SharePoint.
• That a plan will never be complete, it will evolve as you integrate SharePoint into your enterprise, and as SharePoint Online evolves.

See you there!

Cincinnati SharePoint User Group Meeting – Thursday 1/3/2013  6:00-8:00

Please register here so we know how much food to get! http://www.meetup.com/TechLife-Cincinnati/events/94158842/

Lisa Gardner will present on SharePoint and SQL Server

SharePoint is a rapidly growing application that relies heavily on SQL Server. In this session, we will discuss what a DBA needs to know to successfully manage instances hosting SharePoint databases. What configuration options are best for a SharePoint workload? What kind of maintenance should be performed? How should databases be provisioned? What the heck are all these databases for anyway? We will also discuss some nomenclature and key components of SharePoint to help DBAs better communicate with SharePoint application teams.

This presentation is aimed at DBAs who have to manage SharePoint databases, but it definitely pertains to SharePoint administrators as well.

  • Outline:
    • SharePoint Overview
    • SharePoint Databases – what they are, best practices, sizing guidance
    • SQL Server Configuration, Setup, and Maintenance for hosting SharePoint
    • What to look out for – common

SharePoint Saturday Columbus 2011!

Join me and thirty other speakers for a free day of SharePoint learning on Saturday August 20th, 2011.

Stolen right from their web site:

Join SharePoint architects, developers, and other professionals that work with SharePoint 2007 and 2010 for SharePoint Saturday Columbus event.  SharePoint Saturday is an educational, informative & lively day filled with sessions from respected SharePoint professionals & MVPs, covering a wide variety of SharePoint-orientated topics.  SharePoint Saturday is FREE, open to the public and is your local chance to immerse yourself in SharePoint!

I will be speaking on a subject that I’ve always enjoyed (and what much of this blog is about), “SharePoint 2007 and 2010 Customization for Site Owners”.

This session will get you, the SharePoint Site Owner, started in customizing your SharePoint site. It is not a programming session, but does include some JavaScript coding. It is not a graphics design session, but does include some Cascading Style Sheets. It is not a SharePoint Designer session, but it will make use of it. And nothing requires access to the SharePoint servers.

While the session is for the SharePoint Site Owner, it's also for the developer who does not want to "reinvent the wheel". All you need to apply what you learn here are basic SharePoint skills, how to copy and paste and some puzzle solving skills.

And as I have just released a book on the same topic, I’ll be brining a few copies to give away! If you don’t want to wait until August, you can get it at Amazon (with free shipping) or until the end of July, directly from the publisher with a 25% discount (with this code: 77ULP6VH).
